Nikah/ Marriage in Islam:-

"Nikah" is another Arabic word in the list of serious intentional mistranslations by the followers  of Muhammad. The word has been invariably translated as “marriage.”

But, those who understand Arabic, know that this is not the exact meaning of the word. There is another word that is normally translated as marriage, and correctly so. It is the Arabic word “Zawaj”. It is also mentioned in the Quran, in the following verses:
33: 37, 4: 3; 24: 3; 33: 53

4: 3        If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans marry [ankihou] women of your choice two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them) then only one or (a captive) that your right hands possess.  That will be more suitable to prevent you from doing injustice.

24: 3 “Let no man guilty of adultery or fornication marry [yankihou] and but a woman similarly guilty, or an Unbeliever: nor let any but such a man or an Unbeliever marry [yankihouha] such a woman: to the Believers such a thing is forbidden.”

33: 53 “ .... And when ye ask (Mohammed’s wives) for anything ye want, ask them from before a screen [hijabi] : that makes for greater purity for your hearts and for theirs. Nor is it right for you that ye should annoy Allah's Messenger, or that ye should marry [tankahoo] his widows after him at any time. Truly such a thing is in Allah's sight an enormity.”

Other verses where this word is also used are:

Sura 2: 221, 230, 232, 235 & 237; Sura 4: 6, 22 ,25 & 127; Sura 24:3, 27, 32, 33, 60 & 127; Sura 33: 49 & 50

To actually understand the difference in meaning between Nikah & Marriage, we have to explore what the word means based upon the classical Arabic reference books according to the opinion of recognized Muhammadan scholars.

According to the Dictionary of the Quranic phrases and its meaning; Sheik Mousa Ben Mohammed Al Kaleeby, Cairo, Maktabat Al Adab, 2002:

The definition of “Nikah” is the penetration of one thing by another. Examples would be as in saying the seed (Nakaha) the soil or sleep (Nakaha) the eye. It also can mean the entwining of two objects one with the other. An example would be saying the trees (Nakaha) each other, meaning they entwined with one another.

From Kitab (Book of) Al Nikah. Commentary of Imam Ahmed Ben Ali Ben Hagar Al Askalani, Beirut, Dar Al Balagha, 1986

Linguistically, “Nikah” means embracing or penetrating. When it is pronounced “Nokh” it refers to a woman’s vagina. It is mainly used in the context of “sexual intercourse.” When it is used in reference to marriage it is because sex is the essential act in marriage.

Al Fassi said,”If someone says a certain man (Nakaha) a certain woman, it means he married her, and if he says a man (Nakaha) his wife, it means he had sexual intercourse with her.”

The word can also be used metaphorically as with expressions: the rain (Nakaha) the ground, or, the sleep (Nakaha) the eyes, or, the seed (Nakaha) the soil, or, the pebble (Nakaha) the camel’s hoof.

When it is used in the context of marriage it is because sexual intercourse is the purpose of marriage. It is necessary in marriage to “taste the honey” (a Muhammadan expression meaning literal intercourse). This is the how the word has generally been used in the Quran except in verse 4:6, wherein it pertains to "the age of PUBERTY", that says:

4: 6        Make trial of orphans until they reach the age of marriage [nikah] ; if then ye find sound judgment in them release their property to them; but consume it not wastefully nor in haste against their growing up.  If the guardian is well-off let him claim no remuneration but if he is poor let him have for himself what is just and reasonable.  When ye release their property to them take witnesses in their presence: but all-sufficient is Allah in taking account.

The Shafi'i and Hanafi schools of jurisprudence assert that the word nikah when used as a fact, conveys that sexual intercourse has occurred. And when used as a figure of speech it denotes marriage. The reason for this variance is because it is offensive to mention the word “intercourse,” so a metonymic word is used to substitute it.

As a corollary of all of the above, NIKAH also means RAPE since it too requires both SEX & PENETARTION.

No where in the Quran is there a section detailing the subject of marriage. It has general rules regarding whom to marry and who are prohibited - taken invariably from the Bible - but no reason for the institution of marriage.

In the Bible on the other hand, it is clear that it views the union of a man and woman as just that: a union. It is an institution created by God not only for the propagation of the species, but also as a practical expression of co-operation and co-existence between men & women. 'Islam' has no such notion since there is no divine 'revelation' for its existence.

In fact, in the language of the Pagan Arabs and of the period of Muhammad, NIKAH meant ONLY one thing: Having SEX with a woman, whether in 'marraiage, in RAPE or in copulation. There were rules and traditions, but no SANCTITY.

When in the Hadiths it is mentioned that Muhammad 'married' so and so from among the subjugated and plundered females of a tribe, it actually was RAPE, since the female victim was not CONSENTING.

4:34 “ Men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other and because they support them from their means.  Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard.

As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct admonish them (first) (next) refuse to share their beds (and last) beat them beat them [athribouhunna] (lightly); but if they return to obedience seek not against them means (of annoyance): for Allah is Most High Great (above you all).

*** This verse actually gives a husband the right to beat his wife if he deems her disobedient. The translator attempts to reduce the shocking effect of such teaching
- in an allegedly 'holy book' - and substitutes his own inventions.

He introduces the concept that the discipline progresses in stages; (first, next, and last). The stages (between parethesis) do not exist in the original Arabic text.

The verse in its original form implies that a husband can choose one or all of three responses, if he thinks his wife is disobedient. The stages are the product of the translator’s devious imagination. Even his terminology about the degree of severity permitted in beating a wife is also deceptive. The qualifying word lightly does not exist in the original Arabic Quran.

His plot is to soften and qualify the concept of beating one’s wife by adding in the word lightly. The Arabic Quran says “beat them [athribouhunna] ”; period ***

33: 37        Behold! thou didst say to one who had received the grace of Allah and thy favor: "Retain thou (in wedlock) thy wife [zawjaka] and fear Allah." But thou didst hide in thy heart that which Allah was about to make manifest: thou didst fear the people but it is more fitting that thou shouldst fear Allah.  Then when Zaid had dissolved (his marriage) with her with the necessary (formality) We joined her in marriage to thee [zawwajnakaha] : in order that (in future) there may be no difficulty to the Believers in (the matter of) marriage [azwaji] with the wives of their adopted sons when the latter have dissolved with the necessary (formality) (their marriage) with them: and Allah's command must be fulfilled

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 1.88        Narrated byAbdullah bin Abi Mulaika
'Uqba bin Al-Harith said that he had married the daughter of Abi Ihab bin 'Aziz. Later on a woman came to him and said, "I have suckled (nursed) Uqba and the woman whom he married (his wife) at my breast." 'Uqba said to her, "Neither I knew that you have suckled (nursed) me nor did you tell me." Then he rode over to see Allah's Apostle at Medina, and asked him about it. Allah's Apostle said, "How can you keep her as a wife when it has been said (that she is your foster-sister)?" Then Uqba divorced her, and she married another man.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 1.268        Narrated byQatada
Anas bin Malik said, "The Prophet used to visit all his wives in a round, during the day and night and they were eleven in number." I asked Anas, "Had the Prophet the strength for it?" Anas replied, "We used to say that the Prophet was given the strength of thirty (men)." And Sa'id said on the authority of Qatada that Anas had told him about nine wives only (not eleven).

*** Muhammad must have been either a true STUD or a consummate SEXUAL PREDATOR to be able to have SEX with NINE or ELEVEN women in a day and
a night ***

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 1.282        Narrated byAnas bin Malik
The Prophet used to visit all his wives in one night and he had nine wives at that time.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 4.353        Narrated byAbu Huraira
The Prophet said, "A prophet amongst the prophets carried out a holy military expedition, so he said to his followers, 'Anyone who has married a woman and wants to consummate the marriage, and has not done so yet, should not accompany me; nor should a man who has built a house but has not completed its roof; nor a man who has sheep or she camels and is waiting for the birth of their young ones.'

*** These humane precepts were PLAGIARISED, almost verbatim, from the TRADITIONS of the JEWS.

Not one of them was of Muhammad's creative mind except that pertaining to the "She Camel" ***

So, the prophet carried out the expedition and when he reached that town at the time or nearly at the time of the 'Asr prayer, he said to the sun, 'O sun! You are under Allah's Order and I am under Allah's Order. O Allah! Stop it (i.e. the sun) from setting.' It was stopped till Allah made him victorious.

*** As usual in the Quran and Hadiths, this too is STOLEN, PLUNDERED and PLAGIARISED from the Hebrew Bible regarding Joshua's battle with the Amorites.

Joshua 10: 12 " Then spoke Joshua to the Lord when the Lord delivered the Amorites before the People of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand still upon Gibeon; and you, Moon, in the valley of Ayalon.

10: 13 And the Sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the Sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hastened not to go down about a whole day " ***

Then he collected the booty and the fire came to burn it, but it did not burn it. He said (to his men), 'Some of you have stolen something from the booty. So one man from every tribe should give me a pledge of allegiance by shaking hands with me.' (They did so and) the hand of a man got stuck over the hand of their prophet. Then that prophet said (to the man), 'The theft has been committed by your people. So all the persons of your tribe should give me the pledge of allegiance by shaking hands with me.' The hands of two or three men got stuck over the hand of their prophet and he said, 'You have committed the theft.' Then they brought a head of gold like the head of a cow and put it there, and the fire came and consumed the booty. The Prophet added: Then Allah saw our weakness and disability, so he made booty legal for us."

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 5.165        Narrated byAisha
I did not feel jealous of any woman as much as I did of Khadija because Allah's Apostle used to mention her very often. He married me after three years of her death, and his Lord (or Gabriel) ordered him to give her the good news of having a palace of Qasab in Paradise.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 5.522        Narrated byAnas bin Malik
We arrived at Khaibar, and when Allah helped His Apostle to open the fort, the beauty of Safiya bint Huyai bin Akhtaq whose husband had been killed while she was a bride, was mentioned to Allah's Apostle. The Prophet selected her for himself, and set out with her, and when we reached a place called Sidd-as-Sahba,' Safiya became clean from her menses then Allah's Apostle married her. Hais (i.e. an 'Arabian dish) was prepared on a small leather mat. Then the Prophet said to me, "I invite the people around you." So that was the marriage banquet of the Prophet and Safiya. Then we proceeded towards Medina, and I saw the Prophet, making for her a kind of cushion with his cloak behind him (on his camel). He then sat beside his camel and put his knee for Safiya to put her foot on, in order to ride (on the camel).

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 7.7        Narrated bySaid bin Jubair

He said, "(I will let my camel graze) of the one of which nothing has been eaten before." (The sub-narrator added: 'Aisha meant that Allah's Apostle had not married a virgin besides herself .)

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 7.15        Narrated byAisha
Allah's Apostle said (to me), "You have been shown to me twice in (my) dreams. A man was carrying you in a silken cloth and said to me, 'This is your wife.' I uncovered it; and behold, it was you. I said to myself, 'If this dream is from Allah, He will cause it to come true.' "

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 7.16        Narrated byJabir bin Abdullah
While we were returning from a Ghazwa (Holy Battle) with the Prophet, I started driving my camel fast, as it was a lazy camel. A rider came behind me and pricked my camel with a spear he had with him, and then my camel started running as fast as the best camel you may see. Behold! The rider was the Prophet himself. He said, -What makes you in such a hurry?" I replied, -I am newly married "
He said, "Did you marry a virgin or a matron? I replied, "A matron."
He said, "Why didn't you marry a young girl so that you may play with her and she with you?"
When we were about to enter (Medina), the Prophet said, "Wait so that you may enter (Medina) at night so that the lady of unkempt hair may comb her hair and the one whose husband has been absent may shave her pubic region.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 7.17        Narrated byJabir bin Abdullah
When I got married, Allah's Apostle said to me, "What type of lady have you married?" I replied, "I have married a matron."

Salama bin Al-Akwa' said: Allah's Apostle's said, "If a man and a woman agree (to marry temporarily), their marriage should last for three nights, and if they like to continue, they can do so; and if they want to separate, they can do so." Abu Abdullah (Al-Bukhari) said: 'Ali made it clear that the Prophet said, "The Mut'a marriage has been cancelled (made unlawful)."

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 7.61        Narrated byAl Hasan
concerning the Verse: "Do not prevent them..." (2.232): Ma'qil bin Yasar told me that it was revealed in his connection. He said, "I married my sister to a man and he divorced her, and when her days of 'Idda (three menstrual periods) were over, the man came again and asked for her hand, but I said to him, 'I married her to you and made her your bed (your wife) and favored you with her, but you divorced her. Now you come to ask for her hand again? No, by Allah, she will never go back to you (again)!' " That man was not a bad man and his wife wanted to go back to him. So Allah revealed this Verse: "Do not prevent them."  (2.232) So I said, "Now I will do it (let her go back to him), O Allah's Apostle." So he married her to him again.

The same Hadith above: A man called Khidam married a daughter of his (to somebody) against her consent. And the other said, "I have so much and so much (Mahr)," or kept quiet, and then the guardian said, "I have married her to you," then the marriage is valid (legal). I looked back, and behold, the rider was Allah's Apostle. I said, "O Allah's Apostle! I am newly married."
He asked, "Have you got married?" I replied, "Yes."
He said, "A virgin or a matron?" I replied, "(Not a virgin) but a matron"
He said, "Why didn't you marry a young girl so that you could play with her and she with you?"
When we reached (near Medina) and were going to enter it, the Prophet said, "Wait till you enter your home early in the night so that the lady whose hair is unkempt may comb her hair and that the lady whose husband has been away may shave her pubic hair."

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 7.182        Narrated byAbu Usaid
We went out with the Prophet to a garden called Ash-Shaut till we reached two walls between which we sat down. The Prophet said, "Sit here," and went in (the garden). The Jauniyya (a lady from Bani Jaun) had been brought and lodged in a house in a date-palm garden in the home of Umaima bint An-Nu'man bin Sharahil, and her wet nurse was with her.
When the Prophet entered upon her, he said to her, "Give me yourself (in marriage) as a gift."
She said, "Can a princess give herself in marriage to an ordinary man?"
The Prophet raised his hand to pat her so that she might become tranquil.
She said, "I seek refuge with Allah from you."
He said, "You have sought refuge with One Who gives refuge. Then the Prophet came out to us and said, "O Abu Usaid! Give her two white linen dresses to wear and let her go back to her family." Narrated Sahl and Abu Usaid: The Prophet married Umaima bint Sharahil, and when she was brought to him, he stretched his hand towards her. It seemed that she disliked that, whereupon the Prophet ordered Abu Usaid to prepare her and to provide her with two white linen dresses. (See Hadith No. 541).

I know (about) the Hijab (the order of veiling of women) more than anybody else. Ubai bin Ka'b used to ask me about it.  Allah's Apostle became the bridegroom of Zainab bint Jahsh whom he married at Medina. After the sun had risen high in the sky, the Prophet invited the people to a meal. Allah's Apostle remained sitting and some people remained sitting with him after the other guests had left. Then Allah's Apostle got up and went away, and I too, followed him till he reached the door of 'Aisha's room. Then he thought that the people must have left the place by then, so he returned and I also returned with him. Behold, the people were still sitting at their places. So he went back again for the second time, and I went along with him too. When we reached the door of 'Aisha's room, he returned and I also returned with him to see that the people had left. Thereupon the Prophet hung a curtain between me and him and the Verse regarding the order for (veiling of women) Hijab was revealed.

The Prophet said, "A virgin should not be married till she is asked for her consent; and the matron should not be married till she is asked whether she agrees to marry or not." It was asked, "O Allah's Apostle! How will she (the virgin) express her consent?" He said, "By keeping silent." Some people said, "If a virgin is not asked for her consent and she is not married, and then a man, by playing a trick presents two false witnesses that he has married her with her consent and the judge confirms his marriage as a true one, and the husband knows that the witnesses were false ones, then there is no harm for him to consummate his marriage with her and the marriage is regarded as valid."

In conclusion-

There is a word in Arabic that correctly translates “marriage.” It is “zawaj.” However, “Nikah” which is more commonly used in translations of the Quran to mean marriage, carries entirely different implications.

“Nikah” implies that the emphasis in the relationship between a man and his wife - or any female for that matter - is solely sexual. This of course, degrades marriage.

It is another proof about how 'Islam' looks down on the 'institution' of marriage and the role women play in it. It enforces the Muhammadan concept, that a WIFE'S primary role in 'Islam' is that of a SEX OBJECT, created by Allah to satisfy the husband’s sexual appetites, WHEN, WHERE AND HOW IT PLEASES HIM.

On the other hand, marriage in the Judeo-Christian tradition is a union between a husband and his wife based on mutual love, respect and equality.

It is two people of the opposite sex becoming one, not just for sex, but to be the nucleus for a family that shares ALL of life’s challenges. While sex is an important part of marriage, it is tragic to consider it primary. Marriage is a life-long relationship that should lovingly endure beyond the perimeters of sex.
